Special mentions to Doug and his crew of Legendary First Mates, Owl, Mike & Kaitzu and everyone else who contributes to making the race happen.

Special mentions to my loyal crew, the A team: Nugly, Pickles & UndeadlyTime. These 3 performed faultlessly, kept level heads when the pressure was on and proved their worth in every way possible. Without a strong crew like we have, this victory and others we have gloriously taken on our road to the finals would be a mere impossibility.

Looking back on our Season 2 Race of Legends journey, it has been nothing short of epic within the realms of the video gaming world. Still hurting from our bitter Season 1 Grand Final disappointment, our first few bouts on the Ancient Isles course left plenty to be desired. Our 1st appearance was at an ungodly hour in AEST terms- I had the alarm set for 4.30am and had the Xbox console rigged up in the bedroom. 3 manning the race with Nugly & UndeadlyTime, to cut a long story short, we lost, concluded we had better actually practice, and I drifted back to sleep with the headset still on.

Our 2nd & 3rd appearances were better showings although not good enough to trouble newcomer teams in the rankings. 1 victory out of 4 races had us seeded at number 5 behind ‘Glub Glub’ (undefeated), ‘Sanitarium Crew’, ‘The Iron Reavers’, and our arch rivals ‘The Banana Bois’. Ahead of the Grand Championship it looked to be a complete takeover of the event by rookie crews, not to detract from their ability. All competing crews in season 2 have been no joke and the skill level needed to be in the mix has without a doubt taken a quantum leap. This is a fierce competition which I could be forgiven for occasionally having a little doubt gnaw at me from time to time.

But true to their fashion and ever enigmatically, the Crimson Tide boys rallied behind their captain and got the job done. I was quietly confident things would unfold the way they did, but that wasn’t without some crazily intense moments in Race 2! The satisfaction after the race was won was out of this world, while something inside me knew that we were finally in our rightful place. A little piece of video gaming history, in the one and only racing league within the Sea of Thieves- undisputed Grand Champions!

The mighty Kraken has become legend of the seas, haunting sailors from the depths and taking countless victims to their doom. Most pirates of The Sea of Thieves have encountered the beast at some point and felt her wrath, as have the Crimson Tide Pirates on many occasion.

We have been sunk by the Kraken before, usually due to being caught unprepared or copping the raw end of a glitch (such as the bucket going missing from player inventories) and we know her patterns and what the eventual cause of our demise is. Getting sunk by this abomination is part of the learning process and we know how to effectively combat her.

This sailing story commenced just 30 minutes prior to the scheduled maintenance window, so Adi and I thought we’d have plenty of time to speed through a Merchant voyage. We scored a good one too, 7 chooks easily obtainable from nearby Crooks Hollow. So off we went, with a sturdy looking 3rd pirate legend whom we had just met the tavern. Going by the name ‘I Am The DipX’ he’d been good enough to fit the ship out for us and was a welcome addition to the crew.

Full billow for 3 minutes, then she struck.

Kraken gone mad

I pull the usual evasive maneuver and try to turn about and exit back out of the Kraken’s reach. This is about the point I feel something is right strange about her as what seemed an excessive number of aggressive tentacles reared their heads and started their noxious screaming. Here’s where I feel it got a little weird.

NO amount of cannon fire seemed to stall her. Bang, we’re slapped on one side. Creak, she’s wrapped us already. Whoosh, both Adi & I are sucked up into the air at the same time. Luckily our 3rd, highly capable, kept the Brig afloat as I was drowned and Adi was flung a nautical mile across the map.

I return from the ferry to the ship still being wrapped, full of water. We save her and fight the tentacles off, right before the whole process started again. This thing was vicious. Suddenly I go over thoughts of Rare Ltd. developers messing with us by controlling the beasts they put in their world. Are they having a lend of us or what!?

Back from the ferry a 2nd time, same deal, we’re wrapped & full of water. We save her, get wrapped and slapped again, and use up the remainder of our resources. Still we fight on. In between buckets, we fire our guns at the Kraken. But she was too much. Again we are wrapped and this time succumbed to her mighty wrath. Adi is drowned in the process, we lose our sailing master and cook in one fowl sweep.

I struggle back to our remaining rowboat, even manage to salvage a chest from a downed tentacle. I decide to make a run for the outpost and at least cash in the loot. That’s when my fears were realized, another hyper aggressive wave from the Kraken and woosh, she’s sucked me up straight off the oars of the rowboat. Then, what felt like a taunting slow motion action, she pointed me at the black water, held me there for a moment and then dunked me in. I thought this would be the end, but just when I had the slimmest amount of life left in me, she pulls me out the water! I thought I may yet live.

I did not.

The jaws of the massive mouth that held me squirmed as I slashed for my life, then they closed, the worlds light escaped me, and I was consumed. Totally creeped the heck out to be honest. Since when could the Kraken do this?

Anyway, I respawned in the most beautiful location. A profound moment with the game gods. Took this pic below:

Sea of Thieves - Race of Legends Semi Finals Double Win

Another Stellar Semi Finals Double Win

Season 2 of Dread Pirate Doug’s Race Of Legends is drawing to a close and I am honored to have a worthy crew and be part of the 2nd Tournament of Champions.

Coming in as a 5th seed in tremendous competition, we were at a different starting point compared to our Season 1 number 1 seeding and found ourselves in a brutal knockout final against well renowned Sea of Thieves die hard crew, The Iron ReaversĀ  headed by talented streamer and content creator ‘Krotukk’. The Reavers were a late replacement for newcomers The Racoons and these guys deserve the respect of the Race of Legends community, having performed at such an elite level in just their very first showing in the competition.

We had the Iron Reavers on toast right from the beginning with a classy start to the usual exchange of cursed cannonballs. This first leg of the race was impeded on by a savage storm and it gave the Reavers an opportunity to close the gap, which they did. I knew these guys would seize any opportunity they had and I was alarmed at how quickly they caught up, especially after our blunder with an anchor turn at the Fort, leaving us facing the wrong way!

Mutineer rock saw the Reavers take a narrow lead after killing 3 of our crew around the row boating. Uncharacteristically, Master-at-Arms Nugly left the ship low on health and without healers and we thought this had tipped the balance for good. But in true CTP fashion, we never said die, never gave up and kept on trying. What I noticed at this point was a head wind, and the Reavers pulling in sail as they approached Thieves Haven. A wise move while navigating the tight space, but I saw this as our opportunity. Full sail heading into the Haven and suddenly we were right on their hammer. All I needed was for them to make one mistake, which they did! Beached on the sandbar at the exit of Thieves Haven, we rounded the Reavers on the outside and harpoon turned within inches of their gunnel, taking a narrow lead. Krottuk tried desperately to nudge back in front, even landing a weary ball on us, but it wasn’t enough. Our sail game was better and was what made the difference in the race today. My most memorable Race Of Legends to date!

Our 2nd run was an amazing feat of skill and team work, coming up against the undefeated ‘Glub Glub’ headed by popular Twitch streamer Kharites. This smiling assassin is no joke and has a loyal well orgainized and experienced crew. Glub Glub stormed the Race of Legends scene in season 2, heading straight to the top by defeating every crew in their path, earning them the number 1 seed for the Tournament of Champions. Truth be told there were lengthy discussions in the lead up to the semi finals as we pondered how to combat such worthy opponents. After extensive preparations we were ready and on our A game which to our surprise enabled us a relatively easy win, propelling us into our 2nd consecutive Tournament of Champions Race of Legends final, against our old rivals ‘The Banana Bois’!

Some may recall our bitter season 1 final race loss which saw the Banana Bois pip us on the final turn at Hidden Spring Keep. It took us a good while to get over that one and we are eager to make amends for that fateful performance. We know these guys didn’t win by chance, they are solid competitors and are in fact clear favorites to take the win again this Sunday.

Knocking champions from their perch is what we love to do. The Banana Bois are in our sights now!

Race Of Legends is LIVE this Saturday 20th July, 6pm EST. Check out twitch.tv/dreadpiratedoug to view the action!
